How it works

Three mesocycles, aligned to the DEA standard

  1. Foundation

    Weeks 1–4

Learn proper form, understand the energy systems the PTA taxes, and set a real baseline with an initial self-assessment.

  2. Progression

    Weeks 5–8

Build strength, sprint capacity, and aerobic conditioning — loaded specifically for sit-ups, push-ups, the 300m, and the run.

  3. Taper

    Weeks 9–12

Test-specific sharpening and a taper so you arrive on test day peaked — recovered, not run down.

Every phase trains all three energy systems the PTA draws on — Phosphagen, Glycolytic, and Oxidative — with de-load blocks so you build safely instead of burning out before test day.

What’s included

  • Three progressive mesocycles (weeks 1–4, 5–8, 9–12), each building toward test day
  • Training built around the four events DEA actually tests
  • Programmed de-load blocks so you peak on test day
  • Self-assessment checkpoints at the end of each phase
  • Optional resistance-training guidance to build strength safely
  • Written by Daniel Borowick, MS, CSCS, RSCC — the retired DEA Special Agent who administered this test

Who it’s for

  • DEA applicants — first attempt or retest
  • Federal law-enforcement candidates with similar PT requirements
  • Police & fire applicants taking the same or a similar test
  • Anyone chasing a faster 1.5-mile, more push-ups and sit-ups, and lean functional muscle

Straight talk — it’s not for everyone

This program works if you work it. It’s not a fit if you’re unwilling to follow structured programming as written, honestly self-assess your baseline, commit to the nutrition & hydration guidance, train under simulated test conditions, and confirm you’re in good health before starting.

“I started the program failing the PTA. After just 8 weeks I dropped a minute and a half off my mile-and-a-half, and by the end I’d improved my total time by two minutes.”
